Investing in new scuba gear is an exciting time for any diver – whether a beginner diver or advanced. Often, we’ll see new divers buying gear for the first time after developing a deep love for the ocean and underwater adventures.
While scuba gear can look intimidating at first, each one is designed to keep you safe underwater. The latest gear is made with innovative technology, material, and improved functionality for better control and efficiency to move through the water.
In scuba diving, gear falls into two categories – soft and hard gear. Let’s take a closer look at what these gears are and where you can purchase quality gear.
What is soft gear in scuba diving?
Soft scuba gear includes the following:
• Mask
• Snorkel
• Fins
Soft gear is typically what people buy first, some even before they start diving. These basic pieces are also used by free divers and snorkelers. When buying soft gear, be sure to buy ones that are appropriate for diving.
For example, choose a low-volume and high-quality mask, and a fin style that matches your swimming skills and diving style. If you’re unsure of how to choose the right gear for you, don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our team members during your Open Water Diver Course.
At Big Ocean Dive, we have a shop featuring some of our favourite brands and quality gear. Choose from separate soft gear or the convenience of a full set of fins, mask, and snorkel. (Coupon code: BOD2021)
What is hard gear in scuba diving?
Hard scuba gear includes:
• BCD
• Regulator
• Gauges
The BCD (buoyancy control device) is exactly what the name suggests – it gives you control in the water, and it also holds your tank. There are various styles of BCDs, including jacket-style, back-mount style, travelling BCDs that are made of lighter material, technical diving systems, and a side-mount configuration that supports the tanks at your sides.
The regulator is a vital piece of equipment that connects many pieces of gear, including your scuba tank to your BCD, SPG, alternate air source, and you. It delivers air from your scuba tank, regulating and controlling the pressure of breathing gas for diving.
