While scuba diving is generally safe for kids and adults, there are some risks involved, just like with any activity. These safety risks can easily be avoided with proper preparation.
BWRAF is something that we teach and encourage divers, from beginners to veterans, to always perform before each and every dive. Keep reading to learn more about the pre-dive buddy check and why it’s important!
What does BWRAF stand for?
In the PADI diving community, BWRAF means “Begin with Review and Friend” to help us easily remember the steps in a buddy check. Some like to put their own twist to it, like “Burgers with Relish and Fries” or “Big white Rabbits are Fluffy” – whatever you choose, it’s meant to help you easily remember the steps.
The Dive Buddy Check is the first thing every diver MUST do before each dive and one of the first things you learn as part of the accident prevention procedure in our Open Water Course. Here’s what it stands for:
B: BCD/buoyancy – Make sure that everything is connected, including buckles, air inflator hose, etc. Check to ensure the dump valves are working, the BC holds air, there are no leaks or tears, and the tank is securely fastened.
W: Weights – Check to see that the weight belts are on. If you have an air integrated BC, make sure that the belts are secure in their pockets. Make sure that weight belts are set for right-hand releases.
R: Releases – This includes BCD, tank strap, attached equipment, etc. Check to see where they are, if they are correctly buckled before the dive, and how they come undone. Be sure you know how it works for your friend in the event of an emergency.
A: Air – Check your air and your buddy’s air, how much pressure is in the tank, and the air to the primary regulator and octopus.
F: Final Okay – Perform a final head to toe check on your buddy before getting into the water, including masks and fins, if anything looks off, and that everything is in the proper place.
Why is the pre-buddy dive check important?
Simply put – it can make the difference between a safe and adventurous underwater exploration and a serious accident we want to avoid. Doing a pre-buddy dive check ensures your friend’s and your safety underwater and sets you up for a safe and fun underwater adventure.
“When you think about it, BWRAF is something you do every day. Think about the checklist you go through before leaving your home: filling up your water bottle, taking a jacket, grabbing your phone, wallet, keys, etc. You’ve developed this leaving home procedure to ensure you’re prepared to deal with whatever situation may arise while you’re away.
Whether you’re leaving home for the day, or leaving the air-breathing world for the underwater one, it’s important to be prepared. Doing a buddy check can help make sure your dive is about having fun rather than dealing with problems.” – PADI.com
