Issues like land-based pollution, climate change, habitat destruction, and overfishing continue to threaten the health of our oceans today. As a result, marine ecosystems are compromised and the habitats that underwater life rely on are being destroyed.
As divers, we have a unique opportunity to be the driving force for change and combine our passion for adventure with ocean conservation. At Big Ocean Dive, we recognize the incredible position and responsibility we have to contribute and we are doing so alongside Project AWARE.
What is Project AWARE?
Project AWARE is a global movement to protect the ocean and is run by a community of divers working together to accomplish the incredible endeavour of saving the ocean. With partners across the globe, in 2019 alone, Project AWARE was able to:
• Carry out over 140 conservation actions
• Collect 38,832 pieces of debris
• Rescue 339 entangled animals
• Raise over $139,000 with $296,000 raised by AWARE Partners
How you can help
If you’re a diver or you’re interested in getting certified, you have the chance to see the ocean in a way that many people won’t – below the surface. It’s through our underwater adventures where we can see the true impact of the threats that the oceans face, including coral bleaching, marine life trapped in plastic casings, pollution, and debris.
Every underwater adventure becomes an opportunity to dive with purpose and make a difference in:
• Making sustainable choices.
• Reducing our carbon footprint.
• Helping local communities, and;
• Promoting responsibility for the health of the ocean.
You can help by being an advocate for the global movement and engaging in conversation to educate others on how all of our collective actions contribute to the greater good.
How you can get involved
As part of our ocean conservation efforts, we are now offering our amazing Project AWARE courses over Zoom during CMCO. The program includes:
- PADI Project AWARE Course
- Shark Conservation Course
- Coral Reef Conservation Course
